8 Planets, 8 Experiments, 8 Minutes! | Maddie Moate

8 Planets, 8 Experiments, 8 Minutes! Thank you so much to Eureka! The National Children's Museum for having me come and film their awesome space. It's an absolute honour to join the Eureka team as an ambassador in celebration of their 25th birthday! I can't wait to share more of this incredible museum with you and continue to promote learning through play! Subscribe for more: http://bit.ly/1kPjJZL https://www.eureka.org.uk https://www.eureka.org.uk/blog/twenty-five-years-of-eureka/ .................................................................................................................... 8 Experiments! Experiment 1 - Whoosh Bottle (only to be carried out by professionals) Experiment 2 - Cocoa Craters for Mercury Fill a tray with flour and add a layer of cocoa powder on top. Find some marbles or small pebbles and on the count of three throw in your ‘meteors’ and create craters! Experiment 3 - Vinegar Volcanoes for Venus Fill a small cup with vinegar, add 1 tsp of dish soap and a few drops of washable food colouring if you want. Get ready with a few tsps of baking soda, and when your ready for your eruption, drop the baking soda into your volcano mixture! Experiment 4 - Paper Rocket Launcher for Earth Paper rockets can be made really easily with rolled up pieces of A4 paper. However, if there are any creative grown ups out there, then feel free to make your own compressed air rocket launcher?! http://makezine.com/2010/07/11/how-to-building-the-compressed-air/ Experiment 5 - Curiosity Rover for Mars. Eureka have their own remote controlled 'Archimedes Rover' which we use in this video. However, it may be fun to make your own Curiosity Rover with an old RC car or even try building one out of Lego?! Take your rover on adventures and pretend to explore the surface of Mars! Experiment 6 - Tornado in a Bottle for Jupiter Find two plastic 1 litre bottles and fill one with water (add glitter and colour for fun?!). With your second empty bottle, tape the two nozzles together with very strong tape. When your ready for your tornado turn the bottles over, swirl the water slightly and watch the tornado as the water drains from one bottle into the other! Experiment 7 - Saturn Spinner for Saturn Find a small soft ball and secure it to a piece of string. Holding the string centrally, spin the ball in circles and you’ll start to see the ball blur, and begin to look more like a solid ring as you spin it round. BONUS Experiment - Whoopee Cushion for Uranus Experiment 8 - Instant Snow for Neptune Neptune doesn’t have snow, but it is extremely cold and this demo will help to remind little ones of the freezing temperatures on this planet. Instant Snow can be bought in packets however you can also gather it from nappies/diapers! Carefully cut out the absorbent pad of a nappy, place it in a bowl and rip the fabric so the contents can fall out. Gently shake it and the “instant snow” will fall straight out! ..................................................................................................................... Keep in Touch! Finding Moana's Canoe Plants! | Maddie Moate

"Consider the coconut, Consider its tree, We use each part of the coconut, That's all we need" - Join us on our Polynesian Moana adventure as we go in search of Canoe Plants! More information below :-) Polynesian voyagers like Moana understood the importance of nature and recognised how plants could help them set up life on new islands. So, they brought key plants with them every time they set sail across the ocean, and these became known as Canoe Plants! "In all, there were about 20-35 canoe plants, including noni. They spread across the Pacific Islands. Can you imagine moving to a strange new land, able to bring only what would fit in your small, seafaring canoe? What would you bring with you? What would you leave behind?" http://bit.ly/2f6c2tf The idea for this video came from the lyrics of Moana's, "Where You Are" (Music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Mark Mancina) "....Consider the coconut, Consider its tree, We use each part of the coconut, That's all we need. We make our nets from the fibers, The water is sweet inside, We use the leaves to build fires, We cook up the meat inside. Consider the coconuts, The trunks and the leaves, The island gives us what we need..." Thank you to the Eden Project for letting us use their incredible Rainforest Biome to film this video!
